Using Technology in the classroom

Hello, I am an elementary teacher.  I have been in the classroom for about 15 years.  I truly believe that technology in the classroom keeps the interest of students and prepare them for real world opportunities that will be available to them.  Technology allow students to have more interactive learning.  Our students have become bored with the standard paper pencil assignments.  Students are more engaged in lessons that makes them think and involve technology.  I have seen smart board lessons keep the whole class actively engaged in a lesson.  As educators we have to give meaningful assignments that make our students think and allow creativity.

  1. I know that this may not directly relate to technology and education, but I am going to ask anyway. What is the most important advice you would give to a first-year teacher?

  2. Always be flexible with your teaching styles and methods. Most importantly be open to change, because you never know where you will find your dream job and grade.

  3. I was fortunate enough to have a Smartboard in my room, and lucky enough to become certified in Smartboard tech (allowed me to teach colleagues about smartboard and get credit for it). You are right when you say that it can allow for whole class engagement- it is a fantastic tool to have. We do have to be careful about how we use it, however, as many teachers fall into the rut of using it mostly as one would use a simple whiteboard, and not regularly take advantage of the myriad of tools that Smartboard has.
It was funny to me that when I first started teaching and would have trouble with the Smartboard, my students would make suggestions to fix whatever problem was having, and more often than not they'd know exactly what to do! As you say, we need to learn as much as we can about technology because this is what our kids are growing up with, and we need to keep them interested.
